Asshat of the Week: Ann Coulter

Well, I got an idea while browsing around the blogosphere. Why don’t I make an award similar to to Olbermann’s “Worst Person In the World” segment on Countdown? It’s just going to be made up of people that annoy me or people that I think deserve… special recognition for their antics. So, who better to kick off a tradition than Ann Coulter…

Those of you who know me (which is probably a very small number, considering how few people read this as of yet) probably also know that I hate Ann Coulter. She exemplifies everything that I hate about how politics are debated in this country. She insults people instead of debating their positions and does so in the most vile way possible. So, why this week?

I know that I am, in effect, calling them an “asshat,” but a playful and sarcastic insult pales in comparison to the antics of the honoree…

Well, Media Matters has a few stories up about her today. The drama essentially started on Wednesday, when Chris Matthews had the Coultergeist on Hardball. (Well, it started before that, but this is where my annoyance really got piqued.) Elizabeth Edwards, wife of Presidential Candidate John Edwards, called in, asking, quite politely I might add, for Coulter to stop spewing her normal filth and continuously lowering the bar for political debate. Our (least) favorite conservative pundit then immediately construed it as an attack against her, and fired back at Edwards in her typical defensive and vitriolic manner.

The incident that Elizabeth brought up was a 2003 column in which Coulter appeared to make light of the death of the Edwards’ son and implied that John exploited that death for political purposes (a quip about a bumper sticker, I believe). Coulter’s original position was that “[well, it was four years ago... come on...]” She then changed her defense to accusing Elizabeth of lying about her column, even in the face of it being quoted back to her. She then said that it was “taken out of context.”

She simply parrots BillO’s same defenses when he looks bad due to quoting, and proceeds to insult anyone who questions her word choice or whether or not she should be shelling what she does. Together, she and her writings are a blight on our political discourse…

Congratulations to Ann Coulter, the inaugural “Asshat of the week.”
