			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Almost two years ago, I wrote <a href="http://casarana.wordpress.com/2007/12/29/dr-ron-paul-a-snake-in-the-grass/" target="_blank">this critique</a> of then Presidential Candidate and once and future crazy Congresscritter Ron Paul, and it became my third most popular post (behind one about China and one about a stupid religious argument), no matter how much of a tall dwarf contest that actually is. It seems to be the fact that when you criticize a public figure with a fanatically devoted following on the internet, you will bring at least some of the crazies out of the woodwork, and they will, undoubtedly, showcase some of their ignorance and their insanity (a note on the comment thread on the Ron Paul post: the comments that you see are the more intelligent of the ones I received, the vast majority of those comments said nothing substantive and were all just crazy vomit projected from a keyboard somewhere. Those didn&#8217;t get past my spam filter).</p>
<p>So, I definitely should not have been surprised at the overwhelmingly negative and idiotic replies I got when I made a flippant remark about Sarah Palin on a Facebook poll. However, given my generally argumentative nature (and my unfortunate habit of baiting people on the internet), I just had to clack out a disrespectful comment at the former Alaskan Governor&#8217;s expense, and now I am going to share some of the morons&#8217; responses with you, with a few sarcastic remarks thrown in.</p>
<p><span id="more-117"></span>The poll question was: &#8220;Is Sarah Palin a reality TV star or a Serious Politician?&#8221; (I answered &#8220;Reality TV Star,&#8221; though it is an exceedingly stupid question). In what would be the &#8220;most liked&#8221; comment of that thread (see? not everyone&#8217;s a dittohead), I wrote:</p>
<blockquote><p>Sarah Palin is just an idiot. The fact that  she was ever put in charge of anything is absolutely amazing.</p></blockquote>
<p>Now, that obviously wasn&#8217;t a thoughtful or substantive comment, and I&#8217;m completely willing to admit that. In fact, the second sentence of that comment is a paraphrase of a line from the Family Guy Episode <a title="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Dream_of_Jesus" href="http://" target="_blank"><em>I Dream of Jesus</em></a> (from the scene where Jesus is chastising President W). Nevertheless, I do stand by it. Ever since she has stepped on to the national scene, she has demonstrated nothing less than her complete lack of knowledge about <a href="http://snafu-ed.blogspot.com/2008/09/sarah-palins-history-lesson.html" target="_blank">history</a>, <a href="http://www.swamppolitics.com/news/politics/blog/2008/10/sarah_palin_supreme_court_ruli.html" target="_blank">law</a>, <a href="http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/09/25/eveningnews/main4479062.shtml" target="_blank">foreign policy</a>, <a href="http://www.slate.com/id/2203120/" target="_blank">science</a>, and <a href="http://correspondents.theatlantic.com/conor_clarke/2009/06/sarah_palins_economics_lesson.php" target="_blank">economics</a>. I brought some of these points up when I was actually taking the time to respond to these replies.</p>
<p>However, you would think that I was making a cold, vicious, and calculated strike on America&#8217;s favorite beauty queen (no, not <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/05/11/carrie-prejean-satan-was_n_201687.html" target="_blank">Carrie Prejean</a>, though the two are of similar intellectual capacity) if you went on the negative replies (the vast majority were negative) I received. There were a few common themes that carried through the vast majority of the replies: they were misspelled (forgivable on the internet); they had bad grammar (also forgivable on the internet); they defended Sarah Palin by attacking President Obama (who I voted for, but have since been moderately disappointed in, though I would not take back that vote if McCain was the only alternative); they called me an idiot (or some derivation thereof); they assumed that, because I dislike Palin, I&#8217;m some sort of evil Leftist; and they are full of falsehoods. Here are some of the more egregious examples (unedited with the posters&#8217; names intact, because they were already published publicly online with their comments):</p>

<p>Those were all replies to my original comment, not to some reply I made further down in the thread. You saw everything they replied to. I definitely don&#8217;t hate America (Without freedom of speech, how I would I be able to piss all of those people off with two sentences?), and the job Obama has done in office or during his tenure in the Senate has nothing to do with whether or not Sarah Palin is an idiot (also, Obama hasn&#8217;t tripled the national debt). Furthermore, &#8220;ignoramus&#8221; is not an adjective. Also, you are more than welcome to call anybody you want an idiot on the internet (I sure did), but you might just end up looking like an enormous jackass (I&#8217;ll completely admit that several people thought that I was). You&#8217;ll just end up looking like a stupid, enormous jackass if you call people idiots through misspelled and grammatically incorrect comments. I understand that people might not care too much about checking their spelling and grammar on the internet, but, when questioning someone&#8217;s intelligence, it is definitely worth while to make sure that your house isn&#8217;t glass first.</p>
<p>So, what did we learn? Well, that Facebook is probably a better place to start flame wars than my little blog, for one. Also, it only takes two insulting sentences to mobilize the vast army of dittoheads on the internet. Finally, and related to the last thing, it is really, really easy to rile people up when their political heroes are challenged.</p>

		<title>Thoughts on Michael Moore&#8217;s New Movie and Capitalism&#8230;</title>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Today, I saw Michael Moore&#8217;s new movie, <em>Capitalism: A Love Story</em> and thought that I, as both a graduate student in Economics who is getting experience in the field during the great financial crisis. As a movie, it was pretty entertaining, as his movies tend to be, full of rhetorical flair, tear-jerking moments of people crying, polemics, and a couple of stunts that looked good for the camera.</p>
<p>It does also make some salient points, particularly about the insanity behind a great deal of modern finance and the greed that must be driving many Chief Executive Officers, and it, predictably but saliently, highlights the people who are left behind by our economic system. Particular attention was paid to people whose homes were foreclosed upon, people who lost their jobs through no misdeed of their own, and the people who gained the most from the hollow economic growth of the Bush Years. He also highlighted the inherent conflicts of interest that arise when corporations contribute to political campaigns and provide preferential treatment to people in power and the despicable lengths to which some will go to make a buck (look up &#8220;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_peasant" target="_blank">Dead Peasant</a>&#8221; insurance policies if you feel like getting mad).</p>
<p>That being said, I have some issues, most of which are pretty minor, but I take particular umbrage at his erection of a particular man of straw he calls &#8220;Capitalism.&#8221;</p>
<p><span id="more-113"></span>On a personal note, before I start in earnest, I would like to note that I consider myself a Capitalist, it&#8217;s kind of hard not to be one when you study economics. I would also like to say that, throughout our entire history, the United States has never had a truly &#8220;Capitalist&#8221; economy. In fact, I would posit that our economy under the Bush Administration was one of the least &#8220;Capitalist&#8221; economies our country has hosted since the Civil War. This brings me to my central criticism of this movie: What Mr. Moore was attacking wasn&#8217;t Capitalism.</p>
<p>In a Capitalist System, &#8220;too big to fail&#8221; isn&#8217;t even close to being in the vernacular, let alone a justification for government intrusion in the market. In a Capitalist System, people and organizations have to pay for the mistakes they make, instead of having the government bail them out. Capitalism entails a level playing field between suppliers and consumers, with the only sway being granted by relative elasticities of supply and demand (particularly in labor markets). Capitalism entails the punishment of organizations that defraud their customers (third-party loan originators) or defraud the public (Bond Rating Agencies). Those were all conditions not met by our economy under Bush, whose policies and nonenforcement of law were key contributors to the financial crisis.</p>
<p>Am I an Anarcho-Capitalist? Of course not. A country is like a nuclear power plant, and the reactor is like the economy. If regulated carefully and appropriately, the reactor provides power to the plant and the surrounding area. If no risks are taken and the reactor is run under capacity, then only a small amount of power is produced. If the reactor unregulated and allowed to run without supervision, it will overheat and explode, causing much misery. This is what happened to our economy. We need strong regulations to rectify any and all market failures that exist in any capitalist system (particularly externalities and moral hazard). Furthermore, we need laws against non-persons claiming ownership of people (such as the case with &#8220;Dead Peasant&#8221; policies).</p>
<p>What I take offense to is Moore&#8217;s painting of Capitalism as an evil, something that is necessarily malevolent and unfeeling. Capitalism can certainly be a means through which some people can exploit others, just as Democracy enables the tyranny of the majority and mob rule. The key is to include key individual protections in to the legal framework: stronger laws against false advertising, higher top marginal tax rates (and more brackets), stronger enforcement of antitrust. We need an economy that works for the people, and capitalism is still the way to do it, but, to make another metaphor, even the strongest plow horse won&#8217;t help a farmer if it just tramples his crops.</p>
<p>(This was pretty brief&#8230; I&#8217;ll write a Capitalist Manifesto when I&#8217;m not so bogged down with schoolwork)</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Today, I think that I did one of the most helpful things I have ever done with respect to greater acceptance of atheists in broader society, and it happened on a conservative, Republican blog.  I won&#8217;t link or mention the particular blog (I don&#8217;t really want to give them the traffic), but this moment was a long time in the making to be sure.<span id="more-109"></span>A bit of context: this blog&#8217;s comment threads are a battle ground, where liberal trolls (I guess I have been lumped with them), usually of a secular nature, combat right-wing, Christian commentators and the writers of the blog themselves.  One of the conservative, particularly Evangelical was a 31 year old writing under the handle &#8220;jeremy&#8221;.  He had a penchant for angry posts full of bible verses and vitriol against liberals, secularists, and other banes of his great Christian Nation.</p>
<p>Now, I comment on that blog pretty frequently (usually from a left-leaning angle), and my posts range from long, wonkish analyses of economics and politics, to philosophical musings, to short, snarky putdowns (though, I usually reserve these for only those who are beyond any ability of mine to reason with them). However, I usually try to keep my tone relatively civil, if not blunt.  I do revel in what I call &#8220;Intellectual Combat.&#8221;</p>
<p>Anyways, jeremy had apparently not taken too well to the often vitriolic and pluralistic world of online political commentary (aka, Blogging). Apparently, prolonged &#8220;contact&#8221; with liberals and atheists caused him to harbor hate in his heart, something that he felt put him off of god&#8217;s good side. He stated a desire to take a break from commenting to reflect on what the blogosphere has done to his soul and whatnot.</p>
<p>Instead of reacting in my normal, snarky fashion, I decided to take a different track.  Instead, I bid him to &#8220;hate the sin, not the sinner,&#8221; recounted the freedom that I feel from just not harboring hate for other people, and stated that that, while I may abhor many ideas, I try not to hate people.</p>
<p>He then bid me farewell and apologized for any harm he caused me (none was done). I just asked him to remember that atheists can be just as good, moral, and righteous as anyone else.  I actually think that it may have stuck.</p>
<p>While having &#8220;New Atheists&#8221; with best selling books and billboards may be a good idea, it is still up to us to show that we are more than just little Hitchens clones. Though we shouldn&#8217;t have to prove ourselves worthy of a seat at the national table, the majority has repeatedly shown an inability to trust us on faith&#8211;we have to open their eyes.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I&#8217;ve been busy, so I haven&#8217;t written in a while.  I thought that I would switch things up a bit and write a few posts on economics.</p>
<p>I have some issues with how economics are handled by our society, particularly on the separation that exists between academic economic researchers, intelligent, resioned people who do good research and formulate theories based on observed data, and the people who popularize political philosophies, typically political hacks and think tanks.  This is not to say that there are no economists in the public sphere (Paul Krugman is a good example), but, when it comes to who is visible in the media, more people get their economic information (and therefore get the basis for their personal economic philosophies) from political analysists and commentators with little or no formal training in economic theory or experience with data.</p>

<p>This isn&#8217;t to say that laymen shouldn&#8217;t be involved in the economic discourse; it&#8217;s merely to say that laymen who talk about economics should be treat as laymen.  How anyone thinks that people like as Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh, who aren&#8217;t even competent enough to earn any Bachelor&#8217;s degree from an accredited institution are more credible, by some, on the issue of the economy than Paul Krugman, a Nobel Laureate and economist (who was a persistent critic of the Bush Administration), is beyond me.  However, political hacks on both sides highlight certain parts of certain theories, blithely dismissing the rest of the body of economic theory as drivel.  Surely, selecting and being partial to a certain theory is common, even among academics, but these hacks don&#8217;t choose whole theories; they simply choose bits and pieces of different theories that fit their preconceived notions and political opinions.  The biggest example of this is when Republicans butcher the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laffer_Curve" target="_blank">Laffer Curve</a>, saying that reducing taxes will, inevitably increase tax revenues, despite all evidence and the theory itself, in order to mask their incredible fiscal irresponsibility in cutting taxes while increasing spending.  These claims get cycled through a complicit media, and now we have a bunch of people who simply believe the lies and half-truths.  Then the people vote mental midgets into seats of power, and we reap the fruits of ignorance.</p>
<p>Frankly, we can&#8217;t trust the media, or the pundits therein, to be honest enough or competent enough to give us the full picture.  Let&#8217;s be honest, these were people who were acting like everything was great in the early part of the decade while economists of all stripes were warning that our growth was unsustainable.  The responsibility falls to us to seek out good sources of economic theory and news, so that we may make good and rational economic philosophies for ourselves.</p>
<p>Academics, experts, and other reasonable people can disagree on many things, but the trick is to be first be rational and only act on good information.  (For the sake of full disclosure, I took the  &#8220;<a href="http://mises.org/quiz.aspx" target="_blank">Are You an Austrian?</a>&#8221; quiz available on mises.org, which I think is a generally good quiz on economic opinions, if not a bit wonky.  It says that I am generally a mix of Austrian, Keyenesian, Neo-Classical, and Chicago schools, pretty much an economic mutt)  For good sources, I&#8217;ll update my blogroll.</p>

<p>2. What is the proper method to conduct research in economic science?</p>
<p>A. The economist should not mimic the behavior of the natural scientists, because the social sciences involve human beings. Human action is characterized by intentional behavior, which involves the rational use of means to achieve desired ends.  The very subject matter of economics—capital goods, money, wage rates, etc.—is not defined by physical or chemical properties, but instead by the mental or subjective attitudes that human minds take toward these things. Consequently, the proper method for an economist is to start with self-evident axioms—such as that people try to achieve the highest satisfaction at the lowest cost—and logically deduce conclusions from them.<br />
B. Like the physicist, the economist (if he wants to be scientific) should construct a precise model that yields quantitative predictions about economic variables, such as GDP and unemployment. Then the economist should test those predictions against the actual data as collected by statistical researchers. At any given time, the best explanation or &#8220;theory&#8221; of a certain economic phenomenon is that model which yields the best fit between predictions and actual data.<br />
C. The question is misleading; economics cannot really be scientific in the conventional sense of the term.  In physics we have fixed &#8220;laws&#8221; that are the same in every society and every time period.  In contrast, there are no fixed laws in economics.  The economist might study a certain historical episode and conclude that, say, rent control didn’t achieve its objectives when it was tried in Manhattan after World War II.  Nonetheless, it may still be true that rent control could work in Paris in 2004 if the people in charge take care to avoid the mistakes of the past.<br />
D. To be scientific, we need to modify the traditional economistic approach of viewing society as nothing but a collection of atomistic, egoistic individuals.  In reality, human beings consider themselves to be part of a greater social whole.  A more fruitful avenue of research would be to study the complex groups with which people identify, whether class, race, or sex.  Such an analysis would reveal the undeniable power of relationships in society, and give a much better understanding of economic events than typical, simplistic economic models.</p>

<p>3. What is the reason for the interest rate, and should the rate be regulated?</p>
<p>A. Interest payments compensate investors for their loss of liquidity when they sink cash into a business project or lend it out for a certain period; the interest rate is the price of liquidity. Interest is a monetary phenomenon, not a &#8220;real&#8221; one (as the classical economists thought).  Modern economics recognizes the role of expectations or what might generically be called &#8220;confidence in the future.&#8221;  For example, if the interest rate jumps from 5% to 10%, this does not mean that people have become more oriented towards present consumption; it could simply reflect heightened anxiety about the economy. Government manipulation of the interest rate is certainly one of several tools needed to smooth economic fluctuations, but by itself this approach is relatively impotent. If everyone fears a worsening recession, employers will not hire more workers or build more factories, no matter how low the interest rate is pushed.<br />
B. Interest payments are a return on capital, and the interest rate in equilibrium equals the marginal product of capital. The situation is perfectly analogous to labor, where the wage rate equals the marginal product of labor.  There are various technological recipes yielding output at various future dates, and consumers have preferences for consumption at various future dates. On the margin, present consumption will be preferred to future consumption, and an extra unit of capital invested will yield an increment in output (available in the future) that just makes the consumer indifferent between consuming now or waiting an additional unit of time and consuming the higher yield made possible by the productivity of capital. The government should not meddle with interest rates, for the same reasons that the government should not meddle with wage rates.<br />
C. &#8220;Interest&#8221; is just a codeword for profit; a capitalist earns interest when he spends less on wages and raw materials than he earns from selling the final product.  This surplus value arises from the exploited workers hired by the capitalist.  Under the wage system, workers are paid the bare minimum they need to survive, even though the full product of their labor far exceeds their compensation from the employer. In this respect, the wage system is no different from traditional slavery, where the slave owner keeps the product yielded by his slaves’ toil, and from this fund only &#8220;pays&#8221; them enough to maintain their bare survival. Obviously interest is a barbaric feature of capitalist societies, and will disappear once the system of wage slavery is overturned.<br />
D. Interest payments reflect the higher value of present goods over future goods. Other things equal, everyone wants to consume sooner rather than later. The current price of a computer might be $1,000, but the price of a claim to a computer delivered in one year would currently sell for less than that, say $900. An entrepreneur might invest $900 in labor and raw materials in order to sell a product next year for $1,000; his implicit interest return is due to the fact that the factors of production represent technological &#8220;claims&#8221; on future consumption goods, and thus their current price (the $900) is less than their ultimate sale price ($1,000).  Obviously the government need not interfere with the market interest rate, since it merely reflects the subjective premium individuals place on a marginal present good over a marginal future good.</p>

<p>4. What is the economic impact of saving?</p>
<p>A. In normal times, saving is not economically harmful but in a recessionary environment it can cause the economy to spiral downward. Saving reduces consumer spending and may not be translated into investment spending because of investor pessimism. This will reduce total demand in the economy and lead to unemployment. One way of<br />
correcting this is to expand the money supply to keep interest rates low. This will support private investment and stimulate total spending in the economy. Fiscal and monetary managers need to implement policies that discourage hoarding and encourage current expenditure. As for saving over the life cycle of individuals, we need a social safety net that will provide for people in their older years.<br />
B. The vast accumulation of wealth within select classes and families creates an economic oligarchy that shuts out those who cannot gain a foothold within the economic system. Inheritance taxes, and taxes on dividends, are essential to a society that values equality. After all, the yield from vast bank accounts really amounts to unearned income. No society can tolerate some people living off interest while others live paycheck-to-paycheck off the meager sums offered by minimum wages.<br />
C. Saving (which means forestalling current consumption) is essential for capital formation, but there is no socially optimal ratio of consumption to saving that should predominate in society. It all depends on the social rate of time preference, that is, the extent to which people prefer goods sooner to later. Individuals may choose consumption over investment or vice- versa. Government intervention can skew these choices, subsidizing or taxing savings or consumption or both. In order to have the mix reflect the most economical choices, government should have no policy toward saving, even in the case of saving for old age.<br />
D. There is no investment, and hence no economic growth, without saving. For this reason, the encouragement of saving should be an economic priority. Inflation discourages savings, which is a major reason why a policy of stable money should be the central-banking policy. Empirical studies show that saving takes place over the life-cycle of individuals. Miscalculations can occur, which is why the government might need to encourage private retirement accounts, a system that is more efficient than Social Security because it yields higher returns.</p>

<p>5. What is the source of economic value?</p>
<p>A. Physical objects such as a banana or an automobile do not possess intrinsic economic value. On the contrary, only a human mind can attribute value to such items, and only then do economists classify them as goods. An object is valuable only because there is at least one human being who believes that this object can help satisfy his or her subjective desires. For example, even if a particular root cures cancer, if no one knows this fact, then the root has no economic value, and people will not trade money for it. Consequently, value is caused by an individual&#8217;s subjective desires and his or her beliefs about the causal properties of a particular item.<br />
B. The value of a commodity is equal to the amount of total labor used in its construction. If one bicycle has the same market value as, say, 500 eggs, then we can write 1 bicycle = 500 eggs. In what does this equality consist?  Obviously the bicycle is not &#8220;equal&#8221; to the eggs because of any of its physical properties. If we examine the matter carefully, we will conclude that the one thing that the two have in common is the amount of labor used in their construction.<br />
C. The value of a good is determined by the interdependence of supply and demand, or what might be called the interaction of cost and utility. In contrast to some schools of thought, which try to explain value on the basis of utility alone, the correct approach is that of Alfred Marshall, who realized that economic value is due to both subjective preferences and to objective technological conditions. To see this most clearly, consider that if the costs of production go up for a particular good, in the new equilibrium its final price must be that much higher.<br />
D. Economic value is a complex matter that cannot be explained through simple formulas. To understand why the people in a particular society value some things more than others, we must study their culture and history. For example, a Native American tribe might have valued a particular animal as sacred. The white Europeans, of course, did not share this value system and thus slaughtered the animals. The same is true of a good or service on the market.</p>

<p>6. What is money and how does it originate?</p>
<p>A. Money can emerge from barter, but private interests will probably not develop it to suit the needs of a modern economy. We need central banks to sustain the financial sector. Efforts to manipulate the economy using the money supply will at best fail, and at worst cause severe problems. Monetary authorities should not increase the money supply at their discretion. They should increase it at a steady rate, matching the long term growth rate of the economy.<br />
B. Money is a vehicle for exploitation that distorts real values. Money is neither necessary nor desirable, but is an arbitrary artifact of history. Social progress will lead to revolutionary social changes, including the elimination of money. This will end exploitation and result in a society that aims at satisfying real values, instead of aiming at private financial profit.<br />
C. Money always emerges out of barter. The difficulties of finding trading partners under barter systems results in the emergence of commodity monies. Durable, portable, and divisible commodities, like gold and silver, typically fit the bill as money best. Money and related institutions emerge as an unintended consequence of self interested trading. The evolution of such institutions is best left to the competitive market forces that created them in the first place, as governmental intervention will result in inflation and other distortions.<br />
D. Money is a creature of the state. Sound monetary institutions require planning and a central bank. Central banks can also stabilize markets. Central bankers can counteract booms and busts in the private sector by expanding the money supply during recessions and slowing it during booms. Public control of the institution of money is key to running the economy.</p>

<p>7. What causes the business cycle?</p>
<p>A. Variations in the money supply cause GDP growth to deviate from its general trend. Absent these variations the economy is relatively stable. Variations in the money supply cause inflationary booms and crashes. Lags in the adjustment of wages with these cycles mean that financial booms and busts will entail significant changes in unemployment rates.<br />
B. Competition in the face of declining profits and increasing monopolization generates increasingly large crises under capitalism. Capitalists invest in labor saving devices to keep unemployment high and wages down. Competition leads to falling profit rates and crashes. Some capitalists will then get good deals on capital from bankrupt capitalists, raising their profitability for the moment. However, the tendency of capitalism to reduce profit rates will lead to further unemployment and another crash.<br />
C. Expansion of the money supply artificially reduces interest rates. This causes a boom in consumer and investor spending. With businesses thinking longer term, and consumers thinking shorter term, a discoordination emerges in the economy. The time relationship between saving and investment, production and consumption, is disrupted. Market processes reveal that many investments are not really profitable but instead are clusters of errors. Businesses then liquidate these investments, causing a recession.<br />
D. Booms begin in excessive optimism, often prompted by technological shifts, resulting in speculative frenzies. Deficient total spending then causes recessions/depressions. When total savings exceed total investment, total spending on goods falls. This decreases the demand for labor to produce these goods. <p>A. National defense is neutral to the market. On the one hand, it cost taxpayers money, but, on the other, it provides a stable environment that permits peace to flourish and rights to be protected. By its very nature, government should maintain a monopoly over the use of force, and defending the nation against external and internal foes flows from this primary obligation. Before we can even talk about economic production, government-provided security and defense must be firmly in place. Otherwise, we are back to the Hobbesian jungle.<br />
B. National defense is desirable on its own terms, but the strongest economic impact, as with many public-sector programs, is that it creates jobs and boosts incomes to strengthen the economy. It is especially beneficial to the GDP because so much of military production involves heavy industry. The funding does more good for the nation overall if spent on large projects than if spent on small consumer goods. Construction and administration can be contracted out. Traffic problems can be addressed through tolls and other forms of market rationing. Schools can be made more competitive through vouchers and innovative systems of government chartering to meet special needs.<br />
B. There are some goods that the market cannot provide in a way that meets social needs. Private schools are fine for those who can afford them but a democratic society must provide education to all. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The semester&#8217;s winding down, and Graduation is in 3 days.  Needless to say, I haven&#8217;t had much time for writing non-school-related things (like this blog).  I&#8217;ll be able to write more over the summer.  Since I don&#8217;t want to get out of the habit of writing here, and since I don&#8217;t really have the time to research and plan any new posts, I had an idea for something that is relatively quick and engaging:  Why don&#8217;t all you theists tell me why you don&#8217;t like atheists?</p>
<p><span id="more-97"></span></p>
<p>You see&#8230;  Atheists are a very maligned group in American culture.  We rank in the bottom when it comes to whether or not someone would vote for us for political office (even if we are otherwise the most qualified candidate), most parents wouldn&#8217;t want their children marrying an atheist, and atheists are barred from several groups, including the Boy Scouts of America.  From that, it would seem that atheists are very immoral, terrible people, but that is not in line with the facts that exist about this matter.  According to a <a href="http://www.inteldaily.com/?c=136&amp;a=2982" target="_blank">recent study</a> published in the Annals of Family Medicine, atheist doctors were more likely to take on patients with financial difficulties (though these results were barely outside of the study&#8217;s margin of error) than theistic ones; atheists are also typically underrepresented in prison (proportion of atheists in prison vs. atheists&#8217; share of the total population); and there is no discernable link between religiosity and altruism.</p>
<p>So&#8230;  Why do people hate atheists so much?  I legitimately want to know why, so if you dislike atheists, as a group, for any reason, leave a comment telling me why.  Speculation is also welcome by people who don&#8217;t hate atheists.  I will then, in a follow-up post, answer most, if not all, of the reasons given.  A word of caution:  Ridiculous, illogical, or inane reasons will serve as comic relief for the next post.</p>
<p>This isn&#8217;t about insulting people, however, it is about starting a dialogue between believers and nonbelievers.  It&#8217;s about dispelling myths that theists have about atheists, and it&#8217;s about gaining more universal acceptance for atheists.</p>
<p>In the United States, there are more atheists than Jews and Muslims combined.  It&#8217;s about time we took our place at the table.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>So&#8230;  it turns out that I define &#8220;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morality" target="_blank">Morality</a>&#8221; entirely differently than theists, which shouldn&#8217;t come as a shock to anyone, now that I think of it, but I got into an interesting conversation about the nature and definition of morality itself.  My opponent (I think of it as a debate) believed that universal, objective morality was handed down by (the JudeoChristian/Islamic) God, while I believe in subjective moral systems that exist largely in the groups in which they developed (as I explained <a href="http://casarana.wordpress.com/2009/04/08/why-life-matters-without-god/" target="_blank">here</a>).  Needless to say, it was a situation analogous to two unstoppable forces running in to each other:  there was some deflection and nothing was really accomplished.</p>
<p>The problem, I feel, arises from the way we derive morality as a concept.  Whether or not we know it, the act of making a moral claim requires that we derive &#8220;ought&#8221; (subjective prescriptions for action) from &#8220;is&#8221; (objective statements of fact).  It&#8217;s an inherently subjective process, even at its most basic level, because, in order to derive what we should do in any situation, we have to process all of the relevant information, filtering it through our values and experiences, before we establish a basis for and course of action.</p>
<p>The question of where our moral system(s) come(s) from immediately becomes more complicated when we recognize the subjectivity of it all.  I argue for a naturalistic origin story, and, to that end, I will use a little bit of science, a lot of logic, and a few swipes from <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occam%27s_razor" target="_blank">Occam&#8217;s Razor</a>.<span id="more-89"></span></p>
<p>In my previous post (linked earlier), I argued (albeit incompletely) that our evolution as social creatures has lead to a genetically ingrained predisposition towards a value structure that has us placing the needs of members of our &#8220;in group&#8221; above members of &#8220;out groups&#8221; and leads us to work towards the betterment of our communities.  There is evidence of this in the way we act now (nationalism, family ties, friendship, empathy, etc.) and in the moral systems of the past.</p>
<p>Hell, if you look at the Old Testament you see a command in Deuteronomy to kill members of other groups (those who worship other gods) and a specific allowance in Leviticus to enslave (force into involuntary servitude, the thing that had to have happened when someone can be bought or sold) only members of other nations (read &#8220;Non-Jews&#8221;), and, in the New Testament you see a muting of the murderous commands of the earlier books (though it still mentions the innate superiority of certain groups over others), saying, in essence, downtrodden early Christians should not rebel against their masters (the Pagan Romans or Christians in high places) that people who oppressed them (those same Romans, but not the Christians) will be tormented for eternity in the afterlife (also a convenient way of keeping Christians from leaving the group)&#8211;all ways of getting Christians to not rebel against the infinitely more powerful (at the time) Pagans in Roman society, thus preventing the Romans from simply eradicating them.  Also, the fact that these books were chosen by the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Council_of_Nicaea" target="_self">Council of Nicea</a> (which was convened by the Pagan Emperor Constantine, who nominally converted on his death bed) is another evidence that the New Testament was designed to keep enslaved, downtrodden, and impoverished people from fighting for social change, ensuring some measure of internal peace in the Roman Empire (for a short time).</p>
<p>In fact, the differences in tone between the New and Old Testaments can be just as easily attributed to the differing social positions (Jews that were in charge vs. Christians who were decidedly not in charge) of the populations for whom they were intended.  More generally, religious books are written for specific populations to act in specific ways while, ensuring the innate superiority of that population; more examples lie in the Koran, but I don&#8217;t have as good of a knowledge of that book or its history.</p>
<p>(A quick side note:  Occam&#8217;s Razor is useful here.  I believe that we can agree that all holy books were written by men to prescribe certain behaviors for certain populations.  It takes more (somewhat difficult to prove and not readily observable) assumptions to say that: the god(s) described in any book exists to the exclusion of all others, exists in the manner in which the book says that he exists, chose a specific group of people to the exclusion of all other groups, and that the writers, who were flawed men, wrote a flawless book <a href="http://skepticsannotatedbible.com/contra/by_name.html" target="_blank">that somehow contradicts itself</a>).</p>
<p>Alas, I digress, the question is whether an objective morality came from any god(s) or whether subjective moral systems came from the development of various societies.  Strangely, holy books act as evidence of both sides:  the literal text support the arguments of the book&#8217;s adherents and the historical context of the book&#8217;s writing support the view of naturalists.  I personally believe that using a holy book to prove the existence of any god(s) constitutes the fallacy of begging the question (God exists.  The evidence is in this book, which was inspired by God, who exists, but written by men).  Saying that the Bible proves God&#8217;s existence or Jesus&#8217; divinity is a lot like saying that <em>Dianetics</em> proves the tenets of Scientology, the Koran proves the tenets of Islam, or the <em>Iliad</em> proves the existence of the Ancient Greek Pantheon&#8211;it eventually becomes impossible to vouch for its veracity.  They were all written by men and were, supposedly inspired by some sort of supernatural presence, but, somehow, there is a ruberic for believe in one above all others.</p>
<p>For some evidence for a naturalistic view of morality, let&#8217;s look to psychology and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychopharmacology" target="_blank">psychopharmacology</a> (I love that word).  We have an innate value set (or a predisposition towards a value set) that is genetically ingrained, but there are aspects of our moral systems which are entirely <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pavlovian_Conditioning" target="_blank">Pavlovian</a>.  For example, we steal a cookie from the cookie jar as a kid, and our mom smacks us on the wrist.  We learn that specific actions are wrong because we are conditioned to believe that they are wrong.  Through our childhoods, we learn, through our interactions with others and the discipline given by parents, schools and other authority figures, our society&#8217;s conception of a moral system.  If you theists doubt this, then you might have some repressed memories, or you might have fallen asleep in all of those Sunday School classes.  When either the genetic predisposition is warped or the Pavlovian aspect of moral development breaks down, we get various <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personality_disorders" target="_blank">personality disorders</a>, many of which are treatable with completely nonspiritual means (Scientology hits at this by saying that psychology is evil), be it through counseling (with psychologists), drugs (prescribed by psychiatrists), or personal, nonspiritual introspection (the way I got through depression issues in High School).  Some of these disorders have genetic causes (passed down from parents), and some of them have social causes (trauma, etc.).  It is less a question of good and evil and more of a question of healthy minded and sick minded.  In fact, many of the people we consider &#8220;evil&#8221; in our society have delusions and act on them to the detriment of society.</p>
<p>Yes, I derive &#8220;ought&#8221; from &#8220;is&#8221;, but I feel that I do so not from a position of personal enlightenment (as many religious people do), but from a position as a member of a society that has certain expectations of its members.  Do different groups have different moral systems?  It doesn&#8217;t take a genius to say yes, but the answer isn&#8217;t due to a misunderstanding of some god&#8217;s will or the work of evil force, it has to do with each groups&#8217; different developmental circumstances and what promotes stability in that society.  Can we judge other cultures?  Of course we can (&#8220;Should we?&#8221; is a different question all together), and, as history shows, we, as a species have gone from travelling in bands, to tribes, to cities, states and nations, always involving more and more people are we expand and grow.  Recently, there has been a push towards a more universal conception of the &#8220;in group&#8221;, as a group that encompasses all men.  Of course, we have fighting from the various groups that don&#8217;t want to be phased out against that ideal, but that is where the battle of ideas comes in.  Would you rather think of the world as being run by an unforgiving god who chooses to have certain people suffer for unknowable reasons, or would you rather think that we are masters of our own destiny.  I prefer the latter, and I hope that more will be swayed.</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t want to get into a deep, convoluted argument about the origins of the universe (the method of which has no bearing on my daily life&#8211;sure, it&#8217;d be interesting, but go ask an astrophysicist) or evolution (not my forte, ask an evolutionary biologist&#8211;I recommend <a href="http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/" target="_blank">P.Z. Meyers</a> or <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenneth_R._Miller" target="_blank">Kenneth Miller</a>) or abiogenesis (definitely not my forte, but some of the naturalistic theories are extremely interesting).  As an economist, I am really interested in how people interact with each other (economics is, after all, the study of a type of interpersonal interaction), and a naturalistic approach to the creation of moral systems, which necessitates the decisions of groups of semi-rational people acting in their own self-interest, is something that is very interesting and something that I can comfortably believe in through inductive (the evolutionary bit, though monkeys have morals) and deductive (the bit about psychology) reasoning.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I received a comment on my previous post (I love drawn out debates&#8230;  <img src='http://s0.wp.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif' alt=':-D' class='wp-smiley' /> ) stating that I didn&#8217;t really debunk any of the arguments in the video I was critiquing (I won&#8217;t link it again).  Well&#8230;  that argument was, essentially, that if you believe that you were the product of natural evolution, the conclusion to which rational examination of the evidence points us, you won&#8217;t see a difference between smashing a DVD and walking around smashing people&#8217;s heads in with a sledgehammer, because, apparently, neither of them have moral worth.  I merely pointed out the utter ridiculousness of the argument, point out that there are many people who believe in Evolution and do think that there is more inherent worth to a human life than there is to a DVD.  Apparently, the person who was the impetus for my writing the last post didn&#8217;t think that that was sufficient and would like me to explain the &#8220;why&#8221; of why, without being intelligently designed, is human life valuable.  Well, psychology and evolution are not my forte (I do prefer economics, afterall), I do think that have a sufficient answer&#8230;<span id="more-86"></span>The answer to why there is value to human life (or why we believe there to be value to human life) is in our nature as social creatures.  Millions of years ago, our ancestors discovered that forming into groups was conducive to their survival.  It started as a family unit, with a man acting as guardian of woman and child (yep&#8230;  all because we walk upright and women carry infants on their hips).  Behavior that was good for the group was easy to replicate, because it was all that was necessary for the promotion of their genes, but as families joined into tribes, tribes joined into villages, and villages joined into states and nations, the behavior that kept communities together became more complex and more abstract.  Instead of simply providing for and not killing one&#8217;s family, an early person suddenly found themselves having to interact with other families and essentially refrain from doing dickish things to them, lest they be cast out of the protection of the group and into the dangers of solitude.  Eventually, it came to be that promoting the good of one&#8217;s community through cooperation became the best way to ensure the safety of that individual and its children and therefore became the best survival strategy for men.  This attitude of cooperate traditionally only extends to members of one&#8217;s own group (e.g.,  Christians, Americans, etc.), but the scale of what group an individual identifies with has expanded over the years as we become more enlightened as people and realize that people are people, where ever they live.</p>
<p>There are shades of the &#8220;in-group&#8221; mentality in religion, which, in my opinion, strengthens my arguments (given the last major religious text was written while the US still had slaves).  In the Old Testament, Leviticus states that you can take slaves from surrounding nations, and that you should kill those who worship other gods with rocks&#8211;all prescriptions aimed at strengthening the relative situation of the community as opposed to other communities&#8211;and at least the former (I&#8217;m not sure about the latter) prescription is written again in the New Testament (Romans).  Hindus have a rigid cast system, where the lowest members are regarded as an &#8220;out-group&#8221; and Mormons believe that Native Americans are a lost tribe of Israel that has been punished by God with red skin.  Muslims also don&#8217;t have to abide by contracts made by non-Muslims, along with a myriad of other xenophobic views.  Since then, popular opinion has moved towards a more universal view of community and rights, but the faithful still cling to outdated views on society.</p>
<p>Why?  Because of the idea of god and divine providence.  By saying that there is a &#8220;chosen people,&#8221; you are, in effect, relegating the other &#8220;non-chosen&#8221; people to some kind of second-class status, where the chosen are on the top, superior to all others for some arbitrary reason.  This is definitely detrimental to any increase in mutual understanding between groups.  Regardless of this, people still cling to their chosen status, not knowing or wanting to know that they were just chosen by their forefathers and nothing more.</p>
<p>I actually prefer the nontheistic, naturalistic view of morality, and I do so because it implies progress.  To say that we were perfect, lost it, and now have to wait for someone to give it back to us (you know, being saved and such) is much more depressing than saying that we were more primitive in the beginning, then moved forward, constantly progressing to new heights.  An atheistic view of morality shows me that my forefathers worked to make my life better than theirs, and it gives me meaning in that my task is to make the lives of those who come after me better than my own.  It&#8217;s by means an immoral and hopeless view&#8230;  it&#8217;s the most moral and most hopeful view you can have.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Well&#8230;  I haven&#8217;t written in a while (I seem to be writing that alot), but research papers that are required to receive a degree take precedent&#8230; sorry.</p>
<p>On to the content of this post&#8230;  I was tagged in a note on facebook by Christian I talked to whilst participating in an &#8220;Ask an Atheist&#8221; table in the Tate Student Center at UGA.  The note outlined why he is a Young-Earth Creationist (believing that the Earth is ~6000 years old) and linking me to a series of creationist YouTube videos by a kid named &#8220;VenomFangX&#8221; called &#8220;Evolution Wants to Make a Monkey Out of You&#8221; (it&#8217;s worth noting that all of these videos have ratings disabled and necessitates approval of comments) Finding almost all of the assertions that he made in the first video to be completely dishonest, deranged, or simply irrational, I decided to summarize my responses to it in a blog post, instead of through several comments on the note on facebook.  So, I have decided to write as many of these posts as I can (at one per video) without getting too annoyed to continue (partially because my religion posts get a bit of traffic).  So&#8230;  here is the first video in the series&#8230;</p>

<p>It pains me to give him traffic, especially since he doesn&#8217;t allow proper criticism, but it would be disingenuous of me not to provide the source of my ire&#8230;</p>
<p>So, he starts the video with some unnecessary theatrics and generally comes up like a douche.  He asks us to imagine what the implications would be if evolution weren&#8217;t true, while throwing an ad hominem out at &#8220;evolutionists.&#8221;  He states outright that he doesn&#8217;t believe that evolution is true because he believes in the literal account of Genesis, and then throws out another ad hominem by saying that &#8220;evolutionists&#8221; aren&#8217;t even just wrong, they are dishonest.  The ad hominems set of my BS-o-meter outright, but I&#8217;ll let him make some premises to his conclusions. (takes place between 0:00 and 2:15)</p>
<p>Somehow, he thinks that people believe in evolution are &#8220;scared&#8221; at the prospect of a the judeochristian god existing; maybe that&#8217;s true for some idiots, but it certainly isn&#8217;t for me.  He then goes on to completely mischaracterize and oversimplify the story of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darwin%27s_Finches" target="_blank">Darwin&#8217;s Finches</a> and how it (through a series of deductions and discoveries that Mr. X dishonsetly leaves out) lead to the Theory on the Origins of Species.  He furthers the mischaracterization saying that an analogous situation is to conclude that somehow a rational person would think that they and earthworms have a common ancestor because their siblings have varying heights.  This is retarded and shouldn&#8217;t be taken seriously.  Then he throws out a claim that the different beak size on the finches is not evidence for evolution, but as evidence for creation, which, even if he tries to mask his religious claims in Science, is infalsifiable and is therefore the antithesis of everything that is scientific. Mr. X then mischaracterizes Darwin&#8217;s logic again, and even revises history by saying that his ideas were <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reaction_to_Darwin%27s_theory" target="_blank">readily accepted by the public</a> without noting the heated debates that took place after the publication of &#8220;The Origin of Species.&#8221; (2:15-5:00).</p>
<p>Then he gets into the &#8220;Philosophical&#8221; implications of the possible truth of evolutionary theory. Let&#8217;s see how I would look at the world because I don&#8217;t believe in magic.  Well, I don&#8217;t believe I was &#8220;created&#8221; in the way he implies.  I do want to make my own meaning, but I don&#8217;t really want to live in all debauchery, and I do believe in moral absolutes&#8230;  A note on moral absolutes&#8230;  there is actually a lot of evidence for the idea that morality (or the predisposition to be moral) is engrained genetically and basically comes from the fact that we are a social species that relies on community for survival.  Rudimentary moral systems have been observed in other primates, elephants, and other mammals.  He then assumes that &#8220;evolutionists&#8221; equate smashing a DVD with smashing someone&#8217;s skull with a sledgehammer, because there is no way that we could possibly think that there is morality without god, now could we?  This is either incredibly ignorant or incredibly dishonest&#8230;  I&#8217;ll let you decide on which one, but there is not denying that it is a bigoted and unjustified view.  Then he goes on the tired rant about kids acting retarded because they are told that they evolved from lesser lifeforms, a claim that has no merit (correlation does not imply causation).  (5:00-7:45)</p>
<p>He then states that he used to believe in Evolution, and flatly says that dinosaurs lived with people until they died in Noah&#8217;s flood, using the bible as evidence (as if the bible is actually evidence for anything).  Then, apparently Scientists are censoring creationists (since when?) and then makes an appeal to the outdated, ridiculous notion of irreducible complexity (the NOVA special on <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kitzmiller_v._Dover_Area_School_District" target="_blank">Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District</a> has Kenneth Miller making a great refutation of this). (7:45-END)</p>
<p>So&#8230;  that was 10 minutes of my life that I will never get back again&#8230;</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t get me wrong&#8230;  I think that people have the right to believe what ever they want to believe, but when people are dishonest and demonstrably wrong and still try to force their viewpoints on the general populace with appeals to emotion, ad hominem and a myriad of other fallacies that exploit the ignorance of the simple-minded, I have a problem.  Scientists have observed both micro and macro evolution in labratory settings and outside of the lab, and carbon-dating, which Mr. X didn&#8217;t include in this particular video, dates the latest dinosaurs well before the earliest men, but creationist zealots conveniently put that information aside because it conflicts with their worldview.</p>
<p>That, my friends, is the definition of idiocy:  the disregarding new information because it does not conform to previously held beliefs.  I don&#8217;t care if you&#8217;re a creationist, but if you ignore evidence or marginalize it through dishonest or fallacious arguments, then you are an idiot and quite possibly evil.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Well&#8230;  I haven&#8217;t written in a while (school and such), so this is my &#8220;big&#8221; comeback/synopsis of the last 5 months.</p>
<p>Well&#8230;  The economy sucks.  Unemployment has gone up to around 8.1% (not good news for those of us applying to grad school), and the stock market is in an irrational downward spiral punctuated by irrational swings upward.  Happily(ish), the descent to perdition seems to be slowing, as the government scrambles to throw everything possible at the situation, which leads me to&#8230;</p>
<p>Politics and Politicians are just as irrational as ever.  Obama and the Democrats have largely reneged on their promise to reach out to Republicans because the latter has abandoned anything resembling an ideology (not even offering an alternative budget) in order to posture themselves for some pipe dream of a comeback in 2010 (not going to happen unless Obama screws up really big).  Meanwhile, Obama&#8217;s approval numbers have stayed relatively high, Congress&#8217;s approval numbers are rising yet are being weighed down by disapproval of Congressional Republicans.  Gallup still shows Democrats as being more trusted to deal with the economy, but nobody in Washington really knows what they&#8217;re doing.</p>
<p>Expectations of Obama, probably because of all of the Messianic Rhetoric, have been unreasonably high.  I could count myself as vaguely approving of what he is doing, but I do think that some of his picks (such has his treasury secretary and jacking up the sin tax on cigarettes during a recession) have been&#8230;  unfortunate to say the least.  However, he has done a good job of attempting to be bipartisan (though it turned out to be a fool&#8217;s errand).</p>
<p>Political commentators are just as annoying as ever, the far right ones even more so&#8230;  While there was (once upon a time) talk of unity and all that happy crap, the rhetoric from commentators has gotten more and more divisive and nasty.  From Limbaugh&#8217;s &#8220;I want Obama to fail&#8221; gaffe to Laura I (I don&#8217;t care enough to look up the spelling of her last name)  calling Meghan McCain a fat ditz (in not so many words) because she had the gall to say that Republicans were losing young people.  Olbermann has also been harping more and more on the Bush Administration&#8230;</p>
<p>Pretty much, all we have to do is give Obama&#8217;s policies time to work. and if they don&#8217;t work by his benchmark, then we can bitch at him.  It&#8217;s the best way to avoid eating crow later.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It&#8217;s been a while since I&#8217;ve written here, but with, on top of normal college stresses, the GRE, LSAT and Grad School considerations, certain other things have taken priority.  So, why not start with a nice philisophical piece about the economy.</p>
<p>Our current economic crisis is seen by some as a failure of Capitalism, but this claim has no merit.  Frankly, we haven&#8217;t been properly capitalistic for a while now&#8211;I would actually venture to say that we haven&#8217;t been truly capitalistic (not even in the crazy anarchist sense) ever, but I am going to focus on the present and our recent past for now.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">It helps to define Capitalism before saying whether or not a system fits that description, but it is relatively hard to create a really neat and simple definition for what is a pretty complex system.  That being the case, I&#8217;m going to set forth some criteria that I think would fit any Capitalist system, and then I&#8217;m going to say how well the US Economy fits using the standard school-style grades.  This will be the first in a series of posts on this topic.<span id="more-76"></span></p>
<p style="text-align:center;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong> Perfect or Near-Perfect Information</strong></span></p>
<p style="text-align:left;">As our current predicament shows, the Economy of the United States utterly fails in this respect.  In the case of these troublesome loans, homebuyers were essentially mislead into thinking that they could afford houses they couldn&#8217;t afford.  However, I don&#8217;t necessarily blame the lenders for this.  While there were cases of predatory lending and more could have been done by lenders to educate clients about the particulars of these loans, this is mainly a problem of education.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Americans are woefully misinformed about economics and finance in our country.  Until I reached college, the extent of my training in economics and finance in the public school system was a nine-week Economics course, taught by the baseball coach, jammed in between the AP classes that made up my senior year in Highschool.  I had only a vague idea of how interest rates work and had to be taught by my father about how to balance a checkbook.  Now, I&#8217;ve been to college and I know much, much more about how the Economy works, but I&#8217;m one of a relative few, even among college students, with this knowledge.  This causes people to make bad decisions.  For a country that regularly churns out Nobel Prize-winning economists (by the way, congratulations to Paul Krugman, winner of the 2008 Nobel Prize in Economics), we are pretty dumb about this stuff, and we need to educate ourselves and our children better.  The place to start this is in the schools.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Back on track now, people get these mortgages that they can&#8217;t afford to pay after their low teaser rate wears off, and then the mortgages are bundled, sliced up, and sold as securities with inflated bond ratings that are supposedly based on the loans&#8217; probability of default (to insulate lenders from risk, which I&#8217;ll address later).  Investors are motivated to buy these securities by a combination of the inflated bond ratings and unreasonable expectations for the future of the housing market (showing another information problem and further reflecting our ignorance of how economics work), and they used these &#8220;safe&#8221; securities as collateral for insanely leveraged loans for new investments.  So, when people started defaulting (the ridiculous notion of &#8220;no down payment&#8221; lead to dead-beats, instead of trying to renegotiate their loans, just abandoning their homes&#8211;leaving banks with a bunch of worthless houses instead of money), the collateral for all of these other loans lost all of its value, leading to the massive sell-off in the market (last January) as investors had to find money to make up the difference.  As lending money became more risky and banks started failing, the credit market started seizing up, leading to the recent economic hell we&#8217;ve all been hearing about it.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Of course there were more factors than just imperfect information and information asymmetries involved in our current predicament, but one cannot deny the role that they payed.  Also, the finance sector is not the only place in which problems with information wreak havoc.  Problems with pricing and public perception plague other industries.  Allegations of price gouging routinely hurt the energy industry surreptitious fraud and cronyism plague the public sector.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">However, there are things that the Government can do to move our economy in the right direction in this issue&#8230;  here&#8217;s a couple:</p>
<p style="text-align:left;"><em>1.)  Improve the Public Education System</em></p>
<p style="text-align:left;">This should be obvious&#8230;  the best information that can be provided by a producer will only fall on deaf ears if consumers don&#8217;t know how to think, and the places we should teach them to think are Public Highschools.  On top of basic economics and personal finance, critical thinking should be taught to all public school students, so they can not only absorb information, but make judgements as to its veracity.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;"><em>2.)  Ensure Full Disclosure</em></p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Consumers and investors must be given information to be able to act upon it and make informed decisions.  While I don&#8217;t think that things such as trade secrets should be placed in the public domain, basic information such as loan default rates, Marginal Cost (that is, the cost of the next item produced), the amount that is being spent on research and investment, and other book keeping items would not only serve to better inform the general public, it would remove many information asymmetries and use social pressure as a regulatory tool.  Good companies given unfair treatment by the press and politicians could be vindicated, and bad comanies with unfair and malicious practices could be rooted out and dealt with.  This, within reason, should also apply to the government and the companies they choose to contract.</p>
<p style="text-align:center;">~~<strong>Grade of the US Economy:  D+ (unsatisfactory overall, but quick improvement is possible)</strong>~~</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">For too long our policy has been made by people who are ignorant of economics, and the rhetoric of those neophytes is blindly accepted by a largely ignorant public.  Meanwhile, good companies are wrongfully maligned and bad companies get off either scott free or do so until it is too late (think, ENRON).  Let&#8217;s educate ourselves and each other, and we just might have a robust economy because of it.</p>
